For myriad reasons:
Because my marriage is important to me
Because I have a beautiful diversity of wonderful friends, many in wonderful relationships
Because my brother deserves the same rights that I do
Because love is love is love
Because PERSECUTION IS WRONG
I hope to see DOMA and Prop 8 overturned, and the spirit of the constitution upheld -- a spirit that protects the rights of the harmlessly unpopular from the hatred and animosity of their fellow citizens.
The issue is a hot one among some of my heartbreaking-choice survivors. Very few of us are gay (most of us conceived of our lost babies the old-fashioned way, with our husbands). But we all feel so close to it anyway. My facebook group of AHC survivors was a sea of red this week. Perhaps it is because we know how it feels to be the object of all this meanness and hatred. Movements rally around their hatred for us. The most basic truths of our family are academically dissected by the ignorant and bombastic. Many abuse religious texts to add layers of self-righteous indignation to their simple meanness, often making us unwelcome in our own houses of worship. Some introduce boggling nonsequitors, "Bestiality!" for the gays, "Eugenics!" for us. We know how it feels to be called monsters for the very purest expressions of our love.
It feels terrible. My thoughts are with LGBT humanity this week. I know it has been a strange brand of torture, exhilarating to dare hope things may change for the better, and excruciating to be so thoroughly dehumanized in the process.
