A Few of Her Favorite Things

Trucks.  Elsie still loves trucks!  When we hear a loud one, we run outside or to Elsie's perch at the window and watch them do their work.  This day, we watched a backhoe dig up a stump and some cement slabs and deposit them in a very full dump truck.  The next week, the cement mixer came and poured new slabs.  Elsie never tires of this.  Construction sites are cheap and easy entertainment.

Blueberries.  Tis the season!  This year we managed to get the netting up in time to thwart the birds.  Elsie loves to go "In the NIT!"  (She pronounces it like her Kiwi father, who erected the structure.)

Books.  BOOKS!  Elsie loves to read.  Saturday was a spectacular day.  She was probably the only girl in the state who woke up, looked at the beautiful summer sunshine, felt the cool breeze on her face, and begged her parents to go to the library.  After scrambling to find a library that is open on a summer Saturday, we landed on Cambridge Public Library -- which is AWESOME.  We brought home an all-time favorite. The Bippilo Seed: a collection of Seuss stories compiled from old magazines.  Elsie's favorite is the one about the goldfish.  I like the one about the twins.  We read the entire book straight through, most of the time.  It takes about 45 minutes, and Elsie never gets bored.  The girl loves books.

Undies!  The true mark of big-girl-dom.

It's a struggle to find underwear sized small enough for a two-year-old, these days.  Even harder if you're morally opposed to name-brand characters on your child's underwear.  (Do we really have to introduce our children to mass marketing at the age of two!?)  Unaffiliated, princess-less underwear is almost impossible to find.  Hanes makes a pack, as does Fruit of the Loom -- but both of these give Elsie mad wedgies.  I finally caved and ordered a seven-pack from a catalog.  Elsie loved her new underwear so much, she piled them all on at once.
